Concerto No. 3 in G Major, K. 216 by Mozart (17561791)  Rondeau: Allegro

 

*Ashley Lim, 12, has been studying violin since the age of five with Shuwei Liu. In 2004, Ashley was one of the three New West Symphony Junior Discovery Artists.   In 2006, she received an honorable mention in the State Finals of the VOCE Competition.  She has been a consistent winner at the Southwestern Youth Music Festival from 1999 to 2005 and was a gold medal winner at the Contemporary Music Festival of Conejo Valley.

 

In 2001, Ashley soloed with the Calabasas Chamber Orchestra and was invited back to perform the next three years.  She also performed as a soloist with Les Arches de Paris, a string ensemble from France sponsored by the City of Calabasas, on four concerts for the students of the Las Virgenes School District.  She was a 2005 music scholarship recipient of the Leni Fe Bland Foundation.

 

Ashley is currently a member of the CSUN Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.  She is a 7th grade honor student at Los Cerritos Middle School, where she has served as Concertmaster for the past two years in the Advanced Orchestra and the Combined Conejo Middle School Orchestra. 

 

In her spare time, Ashley loves watching cartoons, reading fantasy stories and comics, and listening to classical music.  She is also interested in rock climbing and traveling.


Concerto No. 1 in D Minor, BWK. 1052 by J. S. Bach (16851750)  Allegro

 

Daniel Lessler, 15, is a freshman honor student and member of the California Scholarship Foundation at Rio Mesa High School, where he plays piano in the jazz bands, plays tenor drums in the Winter Drumline and Marching Band, and French horn in the Concert Band.  He also accompanies Rio Mesa’s chorus and choir and the Temple Ner Ami choir.  In addition, Danny plays keyboard in a progressive metal band.

 

Danny began studying piano at age 4 and for the past 7 years has been a student of Peter Yazbeck.  He has been awarded several gold medals at festivals sponsored by the Music Teachers’ Association and has been a Regional winner of the Southern California Junior Bach Festival numerous times.  Danny is currently an Advanced student in the MTAC, Certificate of Merit program.  In 2002 he performed at the MTAC State Convention.  Danny recently performed at the Ventura County Music Festival Rising Stars Recital.   He was a soloist with CWOTO in 2004 and is thrilled to have the opportunity to once again play with this excellent ensemble.


Concerto No. 3 in C Minor, Op. 37 by Beethoven (17701826)  Allegro con brio

 

Brent Modell, 17, is a senior at Newbury Park Adventist Academy.  He began piano lessons at age six studying with Julie Elliott and Karen Becker.  He has studied with Edward Francis for the past 5 years.  This ishis second appearance with CWOTO.  Brent has performed several times on MTAC Contemporary Festival and Bach Festival recitals.  Performances in the Young Artist Competitions led to an invitation to play in the Roger Williams Young Artist Piano Recital at the Ronald Reagan Library.  Brent has completed the advanced level of Certificate of Merit.

 

Brent was selected to participate in an honors piano seminar at the Colburn Performing Arts School in Los Angeles.  He is an accompanist for his school choir, plays trumpet in the band and jazz band, and is a member of the Camarillo Community Band.  During the summer he plays with the Conejo Valley Youth Orchestra.  Brent plays first base on the varsity baseball team, is a member of the National Honor Society, and plans to attend La Sierra University in the fall.

Joshua Hong, 15, began studying the violin with Shuwei Liu.  Since 2003 he has studied with Joyce Osborn.  His many accomplishments on the violin include the following: achieved Advanced Level of the Certificate of Merit program of MTAC; first place winner at the MTAC Branch level as a violin soloist in the VOCE (Vocal, Orchestral, and Chamber Ensembles) competition for 2004 and 2005; was violin soloist on CWOTO Opus XI; in 2005 his string quartet, with Josh as first violinist, won first place at the Branch level and second place at the State Finals of the prestigious MTAC VOCE Competition; and the quartet was a winner in the International Young Artists Peninsula Music Festival in Palos Verdes in 2005.  He was chosen to go on to the Complete Works program of the Southern CA Jr. Bach Festival for Strings in both October 2005 and 2006.  Recently he was selected as a Discovery Artist with the New West Symphony and will perform with the symphony in 2007.  For the last two years he has performed on the Ventura Music Festival Rising Stars Program.  Josh has received many scholarships for his musical endeavors from the Leni FeBland Foundation.

 

Since 1998, Josh has played violin in the Conejo Valley Youth Orchestras.  His summer musical training has included the following: the Gold Coast Chamber Music Festival in 2004 when he participated in a Master Class given by Tamara Chernyak, a first violinist in the Los Angeles Philharmonic; 2004 and 2005 he attended the Marrowstone Summer Music Festival in Washington State; and 2005 he attended the Midwest Young Artists program in Illinois.   In September 2005, he became a member of the American Youth Symphony.  He has performed in the Jascha Heifetz Society’s Master Class series with renowned violinists Ruggiero Ricci and Nai-Yuan Hu.  During the summer of 2006, he will be attend the Encore School for Strings and study with Stephen Rose, Principal Second Violinist of the Cleveland Orchestra, and also the Gold Coast Chamber Music Festival.

 

Joshua is a sophomore at Westlake High School.  He has played piano for eight years and is currently a piano student of Edward Francis.

Jenny Manquiat, 17, began formal piano lessons at age six with Carol Lancaster, with whom she still studies. Jenny has participated in the MTAC Bach Festivals and Certificate of Merit Program, where she was selected for Branch Honors in all the years she participated.  During the five years she performed in the MTAC Contemporary Music Festivals, she was awarded two silver medals and three gold medals.

 

Along with studying piano, Jenny learned to play the flute in fifth grade and the tenor saxophone in seventh grade and played n the school’s Wind Ensemble.  In Moorpark High School, she was a member of the Jazz “A” Ensemble, where she was lead tenor saxophonist for the three years.  

 

Graduating this year with Honors as an AP student at Moorpark High School, Jenny will be spending her summer in France as an exchange student. In the fall she will be attending the University of California, Irvine, with a major in Business Economics.


Concerto No. 5 in E-flat Major, Op. 73 by Beethoven (17701809)  Allegro

 

Niccole Modell, a graduate of Newbury Park Adventist Academy, is a third year student at La Sierra University majoring in piano performance and flute.  She currently studies piano with Dr. Elvin Rodriguez and Edward Francis. In 2005, she performed in the LSU piano master class with Toh Chee Hung and Steinway artist Dennis Lee.  She is a three-time recipient of the Anita Norskov Olsen Scholarship for piano performance.Niccole was accompanist for her high school choir and a three-time recipient of the Frederic Chopin accompanist award.  She is a several-time winner of the Contemporary Gold Medal Festival and the Southern California Junior Bach Festival.  This is her third appearance with CWOTO having performed in Opus I and Opus V.

 

Niccole is principal flutist with the LSU Wind Ensemble and University Sinfonia, as well as a piano accompanist and chamber musician. She played first flute and piccolo in her high school band, where she received the John Phillip Sousa Award.  In addition, she played first flute and piccolo in the Conejo Valley Youth Orchestra.

 

When not practicing, Niccole loves traveling and experiencing new cultures.  She is also an accomplished Polynesian dancer and enjoys performing as a dancer in her spare time.


Concerto No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 18 by Rachmaninoff (18731949)  Allegro scherzando

 

*Gary Chan, 16, is a sophomore honor student at Agoura High School.  He started studying piano at the age of 6 with Marlene Cooper Williams and is currently studying with Edward Francis.  In 2004, Gary was the winner of The Young Pianist Competition and performed with the Conejo Valley Youth.  He also won first place in the Open Category of the SYMF in 2004. Last May he was a winner of the Artist of Tomorrow Competition and had the opportunity to perform with the Brentwood Westwood Symphony Orchestra.

 

Gary was recently named a winner of the Discovery Artist competition on the piano and will perform with the New West Symphony in March of 2007.  He will be performing at the 2006 MTAC State Convention in Los Angeles.  This is Gary’s third appearance with CWOTO.  At the age of 13, he performed a Mozart Concerto, and when he was 14, he played a Chopin Concerto.

 

In addition to playing piano, Gary has studied the violin with Dianne Rammon for the past six years.  He is also a member of the Conejo Valley Youth Orchestra.

Gary is a member of the California Scholarship Federation.  He is also a math tutor at his high school.  In his spare time, Gary enjoys listening to classical music and playing video games.  His other hobbies include playing basketball and swimming.
