The Thousand Oaks Philharmonic - Opus 20 Concert will be conducted by Richard Rintoul.

Richard (DMA in Conducting, UCLA; MM in Orchestral Conducting, USC; BFA in Viola Performance, Cal Arts) conducts the orchestra and teaches conducting at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is also the founding conductor of the Orchestra da Camera at the Colburn School of Performing Arts (Los Angeles) since 1987.  Dr. Rintoul founded and for nine seasons conducted the Colburn Chamber Orchestra, with which he toured England & California, did national radio & television broadcasts (winning an Emmy in 1994) and recorded a well-reviewed CD, currently in international release. He spent a decade as the Director of Orchestral Activities and Director of Strings at California State University, Long Beach. There he founded the Studio Orchestra and taught advanced and graduate level conducting as well as directing the string chamber music program.  He helped build the Pasadena Young Musician’s Orchestra, the Glendale Youth Orchestra and the Crossroads School Music Department (Santa Monica) into strong organizations.  As a choir director, Dr. Rintoul served three southland churches for nineteen years.  He was conductor of the Idyllwild Arts Summer Youth Symphony (Idyllwild, California) for eighteen seasons and for two summers he conducted the Interlochen Philharmonic at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan.

His educational guest conducting includes work with student Honor Orchestras and High School Ensembles in a dozen states.  Professionally, Dr. Rintoul has conducted the San Diego Symphony, the Downey Symphony, the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra, the Inland Empire Orchestra, and recording sessions for episodes of Star Trek “Enterprise” and the “Medal of Honor” video game series among a variety of projects.  He has conducted productions of “the Medium,” “The Marriage of Figaro” and opera galas at CSULB.  Additional operatic conducting credits are for “The Mikado,” “HMS Pinafore” and “Trial By Jury” with Opera a la Carte, the world premiere and subsequent performances of “Monticello” for radio station KCRW and a stint as chorus master for the Long Beach Opera.  Dr. Rintoul has also been filmed conducting much of the standard orchestral repertoire for IVASI Systems’ “Video Conductor” DVD training materials.  Having played viola professionally on hundreds of film, television and videogame soundtracks, he remains active in the recording industry.


Mozart Violin Concerto #5 1st Movement

Trina Boman , 15, is a sophomore at Thousand Oaks High School. She started playing the violin when she was 4 years old. She first studied with Diana Ray-Goodman, and currently studies with Melissa Phelps-Beckstead. Trina is a member of the Conejo Valley Youth Orchestra and currently plays in the first violin section.

She has won many awards on the violin. Recently she placed second in the senior violin division of the Southern California Junior Bach Festival, complete works competition. In 2006 she performed as a “rising star” for the Ventura County Music Festival. Trina has also received gold medals in the Conejo Valley MTAC Contemporary Festival in both violin and piano.

Trina enjoys attending summer music camps and festivals. In 2005, she performed as a soloist in the Junior orchestra at the Shenandoah Performs festival in Virginia. She has also performed in a master class for Ida Kavafian, a professor at Curtis Institute, through the New York Summer Music Festival.

In her free time, she is an avid reader and enjoys playing basketball and volleyball. Through school she also enjoys dance. When she's not practicing or studying, she volunteers with her church, with Kiwanis, and with the Thousand Oaks Teen Center.


Beethoven Piano Concerto #2  1st Movement 

Hanlu Cao, 16, is a junior at Westlake High School. She started playing the piano when she was 10 years old. She lived in Syracuse, NY, and her first teacher was Mrs. Liu. With Mrs. Liu, Hanlu won her first gold cup and several other awards. Her second teacher, Mrs. Givray, introduced Hanlu to formal divisional competition; she received first place in the elementary division. After Mrs. Givray moved, Hanlu studied with Fred Karpoff for two years until she and her parents moved to Thousand Oaks, CA in the summer of 2006. During her study with Mr. Karpoff, She received another first place award as well as her second gold cup. After her move to California, she began studies with Edward Francis.   She has been an Honors Festival recipient in the Certificate of Merit Syllabus Exams, and was a gold medal winner in the 2007 Contemporary Music Festival.  She is the winner of the MTAC-Conejo Branch Young Concerto Soloist Competition for ages 14-18.

Hanlu is also active in volunteer, visual arts, debate, and science programs. She is a vigorous member of the Key Club, Red Cross Society, Junior Sate of America, and Science Olympiad Team. She also takes pleasure in working for her AP Art class, and has won respectable awards for her unique paintings and multimedia works.


Grieg Piano Concerto 1st Movement

Brock Talbot, 17, is a senior at Thousand Oaks High School, and has been playing piano since the age of five. He has studied with Ornela Ervin for the past six years, during which time he has participated in numerous recitals and competitions, sponsored by MTAC Conejo Valley. As a winner of several Contemporary Music Festivals, Brock has played in the Gold Medal Honors Recital several times at the Civic Arts Plaza. He has also been a winner in the So. California Jr. Bach and Baroque competitions, and has passed the Advanced level of the Certificate of Merit syllabus examinations with Honors. He is currently the organist at his church, and sings in church and school choirs. He also enjoys volleyball and snowboarding and hopes to be a part of the Brigham Young University School of Music, majoring in media music studies. He would like to thank his parents, friends, and teachers for all their help and support, and to the Thousand Oaks Philharmonic for making this opportunity possible.


Mozart Piano Concerto K. 488  2nd Movement

Annelise Mah is a senior at Thousand Oaks High School. She has been playing the piano for over ten years, studying under Heidi Williams and Ornela Ervin. She passed Advanced Level CM with honors for the last two years, and hopes to do so again before she leaves to attend Stanford University in the fall. Last year, she was invited to play at the CM Convention at Santa Clara. She has also competed in the Bach Festival and Conejo Valley MTAC’s Contemporary Festival, in which she has won Gold medals.

 In addition to piano, Annelise is dedicated to her schoolwork. She receives excellent grades in Advanced Placement classes, and plans to major in biology to become a research scientist. She is also a member of many clubs at her school, including Academic Decathlon, Rubik’s Cubing Club, and 411 News Club. She is involved in her church’s youth group, tutors her peers, and volunteers at Westminster Free Clinic. In her free time, she enjoys reading, taking pictures, and dancing. She is a National Merit Semifinalist, a 1st degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and has won an Award of Merit in Literature for California in the 2006 Reflections Program.

 She is grateful to have this opportunity to perform, and would like to thank parents, teachers, and Mr. Francis for their dedication.


Bassoon Concerto in F Major, Carl Maria von Weber
Movement 1: Allegro non troppo 

Andrew Marlin, 17, currently a senior at Westlake High School. Andrew has been studying bassoon for 3 ½ years with Duncan Massey. He participates in various orchestras and chamber groups including the Conejo Valley Youth Orchestra, Colburn's Orchestra Da Camera, and Boston University 's Tanglewood Institute. He had the opportunity to perform with the Thousand Oaks Philharmonic in the Opus 18 concert through the Conejo Valley Youth Orchestra. He feels honored that he has been given the opportunity once again to perform.

Andrew's other passion is the martial arts where he holds a 3rd degree black belt in Tang Soo Do. He studies and instructs at The Way Institute of Martial Arts under Master Conrad Ercolono. In addition to his current martial arts achievements, he is working towards his master's rank.

In his busy schedule, Andrew finds time to spend with his family and friends. He enjoys listening to music, watching movies, and having a good time with whoever it may be. For the future, Andrew plans on pursuing a bassoon performance major at a college where he will further his education and love for music.


J. S. Bach Keyboard Concerto F Major BWV 1056

Sarah Zou, age 15, is currently a freshman at Westlake High School.  She began instrumental music at the young age of three with the violin. At age six, however, Sarah discovered that her true musical passion was the piano. Since then, she has won the Contemporary Festival a number of times, passed the Music Teachers' Association of California (MTAC)- sponsored Certificate of Merit: level nine, with branch honors, and even kept up with her 4.0 grade point average. Her piano career in California started with Christine Chow. When Mrs. Chow moved out of the area, Sarah had to find a teacher that could match the dedication, love of music, and amazing teaching skills that Mrs. Chow had provided Sarah in the five years that she was with her. So thus, Sarah found Ornela Ervin, and has been succeeding tremendously with her guidance. "I'd like to thank my two amazing piano teachers, and my two amazing parents; without either of them, I wouldn't have made it this far."

Previously, Sarah has spoken for her middle school promotion in front of a thousand-something people. Sarah is a natural performer, landing her a starring role in her school production of "Grease". Currently, Sarah still continues to make and enjoy music. She is a prominent leader in her choir class, starring in her Chinese school's Chinese New Years program , and still able to hang out with friends on a regular basis. She enjoys listening to alternative rock and shopping...of course.


Kabalevsky Piano Concerto #3 1st Movement

Nicole Chernavsky, age 12, has been studying piano since age of four.  She was a student of Rena Kerimova and has been with Edward Francis since 2005, when she moved to Thousand Oaks from Orange County, California.

 Nicole had participated in numerous recitals and competitions, winning awards in many Southern California Junior Bach Festivals, MTAC Contemporary Music Festivals, and Theme Festivals, in both Conejo Valley and Orange Coast Cities MTAC branches.  She has been an honor student in the Certificate of Merit program and currently is studying for the Advanced Level of the program.

Nicole is a 7th grade honor student at Sequoia Middle School in Thousand Oaks.  She loves to help others and volunteers in many areas in her middle school as well as in the community.  She enjoys playing tennis, reading, solving math puzzles, traveling with her family, and spending time with her friends.

This is her first solo orchestral appearance and she is very thankful for the wonderful opportunity.


Vieuxtemps Violin Concerto #4 1st Movement

Angela Chen is 15 years old and attends Agoura High School.  She began her musical training at the age of four in her hometown, Philadelphia, PA.  She is currently studying violin with Tamara Chernyak, who is a member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Angela participates in many music activities, such as music festivals, orchestras, and competitions.  In the summer of 2006, she was given a scholarship to attend the Summer Institute of Chamber Music in Stockton.  She and her sister, Christine also played the first movement of the Bach Double Concerto with the Beverly Hills International Music Festival Orchestra.  In June of 2007, Angela and her sister again played the Bach Double Concerto with the Hollywood Master Chorale.  Angela is a member of her school orchestra, as well as the Conejo Valley Youth Orchestra.  She is also an apprentice in the American Youth Symphony.  In 2002 she and her quartet participated in the MTAC VOCA competition, and won 1st place in the Regional competition and 3rd place in the State competition.  In 2003, she and her sister placed 1st in the SYMF duet competition.  She was concertmaster for a year in middle school and was given an outstanding orchestra award at her 8th grade culmination.  Angela also competed in the 2007 TBAC Chinese Competition and won first place in her category where she received a trophy and a scholarship.

A musician with many talents, Angela also enjoys taking art and dance classes.  She also likes spending time with her family and friends.
