The Thousand Oaks Philharmonic - Opus 22 Concert will be conducted by Richard Rintoul

Mozart - Overture-The Magic Flute

Richard Rintoul (DMA in Conducting, UCLA; MM in Orchestral Conducting, USC; BFA in Viola Performance, Cal Arts) conducts the orchestra and teaches conducting at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is also the founding conductor of the Orchestra da Camera at the Colburn School of Performing Arts (Los Angeles) since 1987.  Dr. Rintoul founded and for nine seasons conducted the Colburn Chamber Orchestra, with which he toured England & California, did national radio & television broadcasts (winning an Emmy in 1994) and recorded a well-reviewed CD, currently in international release. He spent a decade as the Director of Orchestral Activities and Director of Strings at California State University, Long Beach. There he founded the Studio Orchestra and taught advanced and graduate level conducting as well as directing the string chamber music program.  He helped build the Pasadena Young Musician’s Orchestra, the Glendale Youth Orchestra and the Crossroads School Music Department (Santa Monica) into strong organizations.  As a choir director, Dr. Rintoul served three southland churches for nineteen years.  He was conductor of the Idyllwild Arts Summer Youth Symphony (Idyllwild, California) for eighteen seasons and for two summers, he conducted the Interlochen Philharmonic at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan.

His educational guest conducting includes work with student Honor Orchestras and High School Ensembles in a dozen states.  Professionally, Dr. Rintoul has conducted the San Diego Symphony, the Downey Symphony, the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra, the Inland Empire Orchestra, and recording sessions for episodes of Star Trek “Enterprise” and the “Medal of Honor” video game series among a variety of projects.  He has conducted productions of “the Medium,” “The Marriage of Figaro,” “The Daughter of the Regiment” and opera galas at CSULB.  Additional operatic conducting credits are for “The Mikado,” “HMS Pinafore” and “Trial By Jury” with Opera a la Carte, the world premiere and subsequent performances of “Monticello” for radio station KCRW and a stint as chorus master for the Long Beach Opera.  Dr. Rintoul has also been filmed conducting much of the standard orchestral repertoire for IVASI Systems’ “Video Conductor” DVD training materials.  Having played viola professionally on hundreds of film soundtracks, he remains active in the recording industry. This is his second appearance with the Thousand Oaks Philharmonic.


Beethoven - Piano Concerto #3, Opus37
Allegro con brio

Charles Su, 16, will begin his junior year at Ventura High School this fall. He started learning the piano at age 9 in Ventura, taught by Ms. Mariana Sommers. At the age 13, after being motivated by the Rising Stars Recital at the Ventura Music Festival, he became a student of Mr. Edward Francis. Since then, Charles has won two Gold Medals in the MTAC Contemporary Festival and one in the Junior Bach Festival, as well as completing the Certificate of Merit Examinations for the fifth straight year with honors. This year, he achieved the highest Advanced Level, and passed his theory exam with a level awarding him future exemption.  In spring 2008, Charles took second place in the Los Angeles Romantic/Impressionistic Festival sponsored by the California Assn. of Professional Music Teachers. He also participated in the High School Piano Performance Honors Seminar at the Colburn School of Performing Arts and performed in the Ventura Unified School District Festival of Talent. This is his first time performing with the Thousand Oaks Philharmonic and he is both honored and inspired by the opportunity.

Beside piano Charles, has also played the clarinet in Cabrillo Middle School Wind Ensemble, Ojai Band, and Ventura High School Wind Ensemble, also qualifying for the California Band Directors Assn. All-State Honor Band in 8th grade.

In addition to music, Charles also regularly feeds the homeless at the Ventura County Rescue Mission, has a great passion for running cross-country and track, and enjoys spending time with his friends. He would like to thank them along with his family for their support, humor, good times…and attendance his performances.


Beethoven Piano Concerto #3, Opus37
Rondo: Allegro

Eric Nam, 17, recently graduated from Newbury Park High School as a full International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement Scholar.  He started studying piano at the age of 9, but became more serious when at age 11 he began working with Heidi Lyn Williams, who enrolled him in the rigorous Certificate of Merit syllabus examination program sponsored by the Music Teachers’ Assn. of California.  When he was 15 he began studies with Edward Francis and quickly passed the highest advanced level: Panel, at the age of 16, with honors.

Eric was selected to perform in the MTAC Contemporary Festival Gold Medal Awards Recitals at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza four times.  This year he was one of the winners of the Southern California Junior Bach Festival at the branch and regional levels, which led to an appearance on the tri-county Showcase Recital in Santa Barbara.

By invitation, he has been a participant in the Advanced Honors Piano Performance Seminar for high school students at the Colburn School of Performing Arts in Los Angeles, for the past two years.

In his free time Eric likes to play computer games, write code, and listen to classical music.  He was a Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza volunteer usher for over two years and has worked with the Santa Monica Trail Council in trail maintenance.

After an intensive application and interview process, he was recently notified that he is one of less than 15 students in the country to be awarded an all-encompassing scholarship at any university of his choice.  Additional benefits of the scholarship extend beyond his earning an undergraduate degree.  His choice for a major is Computer Science, which he will pursue at the University of California Los Angeles, and he hopes continue studies in piano as a Music minor.


Gershwin - Rhapsody in Blue

Brian Casebolt graduated from Thousand Oaks High School in June 2008. He first began piano lessons when he was six years old while living in Edward Island, Canada.  After moving to Thousand Oaks in 1998, he studied piano with Marilyn Holmberg for two years, and in 2000 became a student of Edward Francis. Brian is the recipient of numerous piano competition awards including six consecutive gold or silver medal awards in the California Music Teachers Association Contemporary Music Festival competitions from 2001 through 2007 and Honors designation for 9 consecutive years in the Music Teachers’ Assn. of California’s Certificate of Merit performance evaluations from 1999 through 2008. He has completed MTAC music theory examinations through the highest level--10. In 2006, Brian was an invited participant in the Colburn School of Performing Arts (Los Angeles) Honors Piano Performance Seminar program.

Brian is also an accomplished tenor and bass trombonist, and currently studies both instruments with Ira Nepus. Brian’s trombone credits include serving as member for the past four years and first chair and section leader for the past two years in the Thousand Oaks High School Marching Band, Symphonic Band, and AM Jazz Band. He was selected by audition in 2006 through 2008 as a member of the California All-State High School Honor Band and in 2007 and 2008 as a member of the Ventura County Honor Jazz Band. In 2007, he received the Bill Green Mentorship in Jazz Studies from the Los Angeles Jazz Society. In 2007, he was recipient of Outstanding Soloist Awards at the Reno International Jazz Festival and the Santa Barbara Jazz Festival. Brian is also the recipient of the 2008 Thousand Oaks High School John Phillip Sousa Award for overall excellence in musical performance by a band member.

Brian’s other interests include unicycling, skiing, snowboarding, and surfing.  Brian plans to attend the University of Southern California this fall and pursue a major in Engineering and a Minor in Music.


Bach - Keyboard Concerto in D minor, BWV 1052
Allegro

Alexander Agate, 13, has been home-schooled since kindergarten. He started studying piano with his mother for 9 months when he was around 9 years old. After a two-year gap, he continued under Mona Wu DeCesare with whom he has studied for the past two years. While piano is his primary instrument, he also studies violin, through which he participates in the California State University, Northridge (CSUN) youth orchestra, and saxophone. He recently achieved the Music Teachers Association of California (MTAC) Certificate of Merit Level 7 with honors and was invited to play at the Conejo Valley Honors Recital and the MTAC 2008 Annual Convention.

Over the past few years he has performed and achieved recognition in a number competitions and showcases including the Conejo Valley Regional Bach Competition (2007, 2008), Tri-County Bach Competition (2007) (subsequently played at the Bach Showcase in Santa Barbara for Tri-County winners), Southern California Summer Festival 2007 (Baroque and Contemporary Divisions), and MTAC’s Contemporary Festival 2007 (he subsequently played with other winners at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza). He was a Gold Medal Winner at the 2008 Alberti International/Golden Key Competition and played in a showcase at Carnegie Hall in May 2008. He was recently invited to audition for the Leni Fe Bland Scholarship.

Since the age of five, Alexander has been in the entertainment business, where he has done a number of commercials, some printwork, and appeared in an episode of Brothers and Sisters, as well as in three movies: Half-Life (2007), How to Eat Fried Worms (2006), and Spectres (2004).

Besides studying music, Alexander enjoys composing his own music and playing piano-cello duets with his sister. He is an avid reader and has been writing his own stories since he was very young and hopes to publish his books someday. He has a 2nd degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and will earn his 3rd degree in August.


Grieg - Piano Concerto in A minor, Opus 16
Allegro molto moderato

Bruno Ferrari started playing the piano at the age of 6 in Monterrey, Mexico.  His motivation was to rehabilitate a severe arm injury that had damaged nerves in his right arm. Improvement was swift and at the age of 10, Bruno was accepted into the Conservatoire de Montpellier, France, where his family had relocated.

Subsequently, Bruno left for boarding school in Germany where he was able to study at the Birklehoff School under Florian Heilmann, a professor at the Freiburg Conservatory. A move to California brought him to Ojai, where he enrolled at The Thacher School and studied with Julia Green. While at Thacher, Bruno received a scholarship award from the Ventura Music Guild Association--this award is given by the judges to the best performance of the year.

In addition, Bruno is also a recipient of 2 consecutive gold cups given by the Ventura Music Guild Association for superior performance. At age 17, he recently graduated from Thacher.

In addition to his musical endeavors, Bruno is fluent in 6 languages and enjoys traveling and running. As a member of the varsity cross country team at Thacher, Bruno helped the team place 5th at the state championships during his senior year. This summer, he will attend the Hawaii Performing Arts Music Festival where he will perform as a soloist as well as in a variety of musical ensembles. He is currently studying with Val Underwood.


Grieg - Adagio-Allegro moderato molto e marcato

Michael Aspinwall, 14, has been studying classical piano for seven years and has been a pupil of Edward Francis for nearly two years.  He is a Blue Ribbon honors recipient of the Certificate of Merit program and was chosen to play at the Honors Recital in April 2008.  In addition to his classical pursuits, Michael has studied jazz piano for more than two years with Tod Cooper. 

Michael is a recent graduate of A. C. Stelle Middle School in Calabasas, where he received the first ever Outstanding Jazz Soloist award for his piano participation in the school’s jazz band.  He has also played percussion in the A. C. Stelle Wind Ensemble, performing at Disneyland each of the last two years. A member of the California Scholarship Federation, Michael was one of 13 students at his middle school receiving the highest academic award for a 4.0 grade point average upon graduation.  He has also performed at the Motion Picture and Television Hospital in Woodland Hills. 

A future freshman at Calabasas High School, his hobbies include basketball, politics and, of course, listening to the music of his favorite classical composers, especially Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky.
