Performers and Their Pieces
Richard (DMA in Conducting, UCLA; MM in Orchestral Conducting, USC; BFA in Viola Performance, Cal Arts) conducts the orchestra and teaches conducting at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is also the founding conductor of the Orchestra da Camera at the Colburn School of Performing Arts (Los Angeles) since 1987. Dr. Rintoul founded and for nine seasons conducted the Colburn Chamber Orchestra, with which he toured England & California, did national radio & television broadcasts (winning an Emmy in 1994) and recorded a well-reviewed CD, currently in international release. He spent a decade as the Director of Orchestral Activities and Director of Strings at California State University, Long Beach. There he founded the Studio Orchestra and taught advanced and graduate level conducting as well as directing the string chamber music program. He helped build the Pasadena Young Musician’s Orchestra, the Glendale Youth Orchestra and the Crossroads School Music Department (Santa Monica) into strong organizations. As a choir director, Dr. Rintoul served three southland churches for nineteen years. He was conductor of the Idyllwild Arts Summer Youth Symphony (Idyllwild, California) for eighteen seasons and for two summers he conducted the Interlochen Philharmonic at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan. His educational guest conducting includes work with student Honor Orchestras and High School Ensembles in a dozen states. Professionally, Dr. Rintoul has conducted the San Diego Symphony, the Downey Symphony, the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra, the Inland Empire Orchestra, and recording sessions for episodes of Star Trek “Enterprise” and the “Medal of Honor” video game series among a variety of projects. He has conducted productions of “the Medium,” “The Marriage of Figaro” and opera galas at CSULB. Additional operatic conducting credits are for “The Mikado,” “HMS Pinafore” and “Trial By Jury” with Opera a la Carte, the world premiere and subsequent performances of “Monticello” for radio station KCRW and a stint as chorus master for the Long Beach Opera. Dr. Rintoul has also been filmed conducting much of the standard orchestral repertoire for IVASI Systems’ “Video Conductor” DVD training materials. Having played viola professionally on hundreds of film, television and videogame soundtracks, he remains active in the recording industry.
Evan De Long, 13, has played the violin since the age of eight and studies with Joyce Osborn. In 2008, Evan participated in the Honors Recital of the West Valley Music Teachers Association Certificate of Merit program, and his performance at the SCSBOA Regional Solo and Ensemble Festival received an award of superior. Evan greatly enjoys ensemble music. He plays in the first violin section of the Conejo Valley Youth Orchestra, he participated in the 2008 Gold Coast Chamber Music Festival, and he plays in a chamber music trio coached by Joyce Osborn. Evan moved to Newbury Park in August 2007 from South Bend, Indiana, where his violin teacher was Joyce Davis. Evan also plays the piano, studying with Edward Francis. In 2008, he performed in the Honors Recital of the Conejo Valley MTA Certificate of Merit program and had a great time playing keyboards in the Pepperdine University Songfest Band. An eighth-grade homeschooler, Evan swims with the Conejo-Simi Aquatics Swim Team and in his free time, he likes to hike, boogie board, and ski. He is a member of the Conejo Valley Church of Christ in Thousand Oaks and of CASA, a Camarillo-based homeschooling group.
Young-Jae Choe, 17, is a senior at Westlake High School. She began playing the piano when she was five years old. She has studied with Heidi Lynn Williams and is now studying with Ornela Ervin. She has passed the Advanced level of Certificate Merit with honors several times. She has also participated in numerous recitals and competitions. She has performed at the Civics Arts Plaza as a Gold Medal winner of the Contemporary Festival several times and has been a winner of the Bach Competition as well. Along with piano, Young-Jae also plays the clarinet and guitar. She studies the clarinet with Dr. Dan Geeting. She plays in the Westlake High School Wind Ensemble and also in the Cal Lutheran University Wind Ensemble and performed at Carnegie Hall last spring and will perform at the Ronald Reagan Library and the Disney Opera Hall later this year. At school Young-Jae holds officers positions in Math Club, Mu Alpha Theta, Literary Chronicles, and the WHS Instrumental Music Department Student Leadership. She is also in the Westlake High School Advanced Anatomy Class. She also teachers piano, clarinet, and guitar lessons to students in the Conejo Valley. Young-Jae also likes to play soccer, draw, and spend time with her friends.
Jeffrey Zia, 15, is a sophomore at Oak Park High School. He started studying violin with Mrs. Shuwei Liu at the age of six. Jeffrey is this year’s winner of the Young Artist MTAC Conejo Branch Concerto Competition. He is also the 3rd place winner of the Young Violinist Competition of the Southwestern Youth Music Festival (SYMF) in July 2008. In the previous 6 years that he participated in SYMF competitions, Jeffrey has won seven first place and three second place trophies in the open and qualified categories. In Sept 2008, he performed with the Pasadena POPS Orchestra at the Descanso Gardens in their Side by Side program. Jeffrey was invited to perform in the International Young Artists Peninsula Music Festival in 2006 at Palos Verdes, playing two concertos. He is also a scholarship recipient from the Fe Bland Foundation. His other violin accomplishments include: completing the Advanced Level of the Certificate of Merit program of MTAC with honors in 2007; winning first place (violin) in the MTAC Conejo Valley VOCE Competition for 2005, 2006, 2007, and competing as a State Finalist for three consecutive years; being a past Gold Medal winner of the Contemporary Music Festival; and performing in the MTAC State Convention. Jeffrey was a member of Conejo Valley Youth Orchestra for five years under the direction of Mr. Bill Benson. When Jeffrey auditioned for the Orchestra in 2001, he was only in second grade and became the youngest member accepted by Mr. Benson to the Youth Orchestra. During the summer of ‘08, Jeff appeared in an episode titled “Baby Cupid” of Disney’s Wizards of Waverly Place, playing the part of a violinist. In addition to violin, Jeffrey also plays the piano. Beginning his studies in piano with Mrs. Gloria Hilliard when he was seven, Jeffrey completed his Advanced Level in Certificate of Merit in 2008 with honors. Jeffrey has been the past winner of the Regional Bach Festival and Gold Medal winner of the Contemporary Music Festival many times that led to performing in the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza. He has also performed at the MTAC State Convention numerous times in past years. In his free time, Jeff loves to pole vault and hurdle, as well as swim and play tennis. Jeff is also a 3rd degree Black Belt in Tang Soo Do.
Hans Gao, sixteen, is a Junior at Newbury Park High school who has been studying piano under Edward Francis for the past six years. He passed his Advanced Level Certificate of Merit syllabus examination with honors, and was a laureate in the Los Angeles District of the California Assn. of Professional Music Teachers/MTNA Romantic/Impressionistic Music Festival this year. In the past, he has won gold medals at many MTAC Contemporary Music Festivals, and was invited to play on the gala final recitals at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza.. He played Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with the Thousand Philharmonic, in their Opus 18 concerts, and by invitation, regularly participates in the Honors Piano Performance Seminar for High School Pianists at the Colburn School of Performing Arts in Los Angeles. In addition to piano, Hans is a member of the varsity tennis teach at high school and is the president of the school’s Academic Decathlon team. He is an usher at the Civic Arts Plaza, and volunteers every week at Los Robles Medical Center. No matter what direction life takes him, music will always be his passion.
Daniel began studying piano at age 4 and for the past 10 years has been a student of Peter Yazbeck. He has been awarded numerous accolades at festivals sponsored by the Music Teachers’ Association, has been a Regional winner of the Southern California Junior Bach Festival numerous times, and has appeared in the Santa Barbara Bach Showcase. In addition, he has performed at the MTAC State Convention on several occasions. In 2006 Daniel performed at the Ventura County Music Festival Rising Stars Recital. In 2007, Daniel studied abroad with Dr. William Wellborn from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Professor Adam Wibrowski from the Paris Conservatory at the Franz Liszt Piano Academy and performed in Hungary and Austria. He has won competition based scholarships that include the Anne George and Bernice Bernard scholarships and recently placed 1st in the 2008 SYMF Concerto Competition. In order to give back to the community through his music, he has performed at several benefit events including: The Daniel Pearl World Music Days, The Holidays on Ice NHRA Scholarship Benefit, and two performances to raise funds for the victims of the Sichuan earthquake. Daniel intends to study piano performance and hopes to make a career out of his passion. This marks Daniel’s third performance as a soloist with the Thousand Oaks Philharmonic, and he would like to dedicate it to the memory of his Grandfather, Norman Newman.
Amanda Zhou is 13 years old and is currently attending Colina Middle School. She started playing piano at the age of six with Christine Chow. Later, Amanda began studying with Ms. Ornela Ervin. Across the years, Amanda has earned numerous awards in piano competitions. She has won the Bach Competition several times, playing in the Santa Barbara Showcase as a regional winner. She has also performed in the Gold Medal Recital of the Contemporary Festival as a Gold Medal winner. Amanda has reached level 9 in Certificate of Merit, passing with honors. Besides being an award-winning pianist, Amanda is a straight-A student who is very involved in her school as well as other extracurricular activities. She is currently the Student Store director in her school’s ASB, also participating actively in her school’s GATE programs. She has coordinated many school-wide activities, such as the MANNA food drive. In addition, she is in the California Junior Scholarship Federation. Amanda attends Chinese School as well, where she also excels in all areas. In her spare time, she likes to dance, read, and play the piano. Amanda lives in Thousand Oaks.
Mr. Vlad Vizireanu, a graduate of Westlake High School, completed his BA in Music at UCLA. He was a scholarship Piano Performance student of Walter Ponce, the chair of the piano department, but has now decided to focus on Musicology as his major. When he was a freshman in high school, he began studying piano with Edward Francis of Thousand Oaks. He was a winner in the Southern California Jr. Bach Festival and participated in the Contemporary and Romantic Festivals and the Certificate of Merit of MTAC, winning gold medals and performing in the honors recitals at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza. He has performed at various venues, including the Panel Honors Recital at the Mission Inn in Riverside (part of the state-wide MTAC Convention), the Modern Arts Museum in Costanta, Romania, and has been a featured soloist with the Thousand Oaks Philharmonic multiple times. He was the top scholarship winner in the Bernice Bernard Auditions during his senior year in high school. He is finishing his MM in Musicology at the University of Texas, Austin and will begin another MM in orchestra conducting in the fall. |
