Concerto in A minor    Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741)

     [movement]

Nicolette Vasquez, age eight, is a very gifted student with many talents. She has studied the violin for a mere two-and-a-half years. She has studied with Ann Tischer in Santa Barbara, and now studies with Melissa Phelps Beckstead in Westlake Village. She has participated in several recitals this past year, including one at California Lutheran University, where her current teacher is a faculty member.

Nicolette was the first place winner of the 2003 Reverie Youth Orchestra Competition, in April. She received a cash award and an opportunity to solo with the orchestra in May of 2004. She was also the recipient of the 2003 Pillsbury Scholarship Grant, which contributes funding towards her future musical education.

In addition to musical pursuits, Nicolette is also a Gold Medal winner of several ice-skating competitions. She is active as a ballet dancer, and performed two separate roles in Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Ballet last year. Her hobbies include miniature doll houses and all ocean/water sports.


Concerto in C Major, K. 467    Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 - 1791)

     Allegro maestoso

Mr. Gary Chan is 13 years old and attends Lindero Canyon Middle School located in Agoura Hills. His favorite subject in school is Math. He is a member of the California Junior Scholarship Federation and plays in the School String Orchestra.

Gary currently holds a 2nd Degree Black Belt in karate and will be testing for his 3rd Degree next spring. He also studies violin under the direction of Dianne Rammon who has been his teacher for the past three years.

Gary has studied the piano since the age of 6 with Marlene Cooper. He has been the featured soloist in several large general piano recitals. Gary has performed at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza "Music Infinite" concert when he was just 7 years old as well as Kid's World held at the Oaks Mall. Gary has also played at the Shrine Hospital for Children, the Goeble Senior Center, the Simi Valley Cultural Art Center, and at the Hillcrest Center for the Arts.


Concerto #4 in G Major, Opus 58    Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827)

     Rondo: Vivace

Mr. Aaron Meyer, 18, began playing piano when he was 4 years old. He studied for several years with Shariar Rohani and has been studying with Edward Francis for the past year and a half. Aaron has been a finalist in several piano competitions including the New West Symphony Discovery Artists, Contemporary Festival, Southern California Jr. Bach Festival, Valley Cultural Center Music Competition and the Liana Cohen Music Festival. He recently performed at the Panel Honors Recital for the Music Teachers Association of California convention in Santa Clara, and frequently performs for charitable organizations throughout Los Angeles.

Aaron is also an accomplished composer. In 2000, he released Journey, a CD of original compositions, and is currently working on his second CD of original works. Aaron has appeared on KCET in a spot entitled, "Inspiration is Priceless," which features a biography about him and his compositions. He is a writer member of ASCAP and is a 3 time recipient of the ASCAPlus Music Award. In June, Aaron premiered his first work for piano and wind ensemble with the Calabasas High School Wind Ensemble, and received the Director's Award for his many contributions to the music program.

In addition to playing piano, Aaron is an award-winning percussionist, and has studied with Aaron Smith for the past three years. He has been a percussionist in his high school Wind Ensemble, the CSUN Youth Philharmonic and the Idyllwild Festival Wind Ensemble. Aaron has also been selected to perform with the All-Southern and All-State High School Honor Bands.

An honor student, Aaron is a recent graduate of Calabasas High School and will be attending Stanford University in the Fall, majoring in music composition and music technology.


Concerto #1 in B flat minor, Opus 23    Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840 - 1893)

Mr. Edward Lan, 16, born in Taiwan, moved here at the age of 3. He began piano studies when he was 6 with Jill Hu and has studied piano with Edward Francis for the last 9 years.

 Throughout his years of musical studies, he has received many awards. As a gold medal winner in the Twentieth-Century Festival, he has performed at the Civic Arts Plaza in the Scherr Forum. He was a winner in the Romantic Festival, which was held at in the San Fernando Valley. Edward has been a winner of numerous Southern California Bach Festivals Branch and Regional levels and has performed at the Showcase recitals. He also has auditioned for the Léni Fé Bland Foundation at the Santa Barbara Music Academy of the West and has received scholarships for several years now. Also, he auditioned for the Young Musician’s Foundation in June. He has been invited to play at several organizations’ tea parties and other such events. Edward performed the Carnival of the Animals by Saint Saens with the New West Symphony and Beethoven’s Concerto #1 as the Young Pianist Winner with the Conejo Valley Youth Orchestra. He has won 1st place in the Southwestern Youth Music Festival in the Open Category and has also won in the Chopin Category. Edward’s trio had also won 3rd place in the SYMF competition. He has passed the Certificate of Merit Panel level, which is the highest level. This year, he participated in the Honors Piano Seminar Class at the Colburn School of Performing Arts.

He also studies violin with Teresa DiTullio and is a member of the Conejo Valley Youth Orchestra as a violinist for several years. He was co-concertmaster and also participated in the Chamber Orchestra.

 At school, Edward is an honors/AP student and participates on the track team, Academic Decathlon team, and numerous clubs. He was also a California Scholarship Federation Junior Marshal. He has been accepted into the National Honors Society and also Advanced Anatomy, which is a cadaver class. Edward also volunteers at the Los Robles Hospital on the weekends. He also attends Chinese Christian Church of Thousand Oaks and is involved in the youth group there. He plays the guitar and leads worship in song on Sunday mornings as well as Friday nights. He also plays piano for the Sunday worship and has accompanied the church choir. Edward enjoys watching and playing basketball and baseball as well as serving God.


Elegy, Opus 24    Gabriel Faure (1845 - 1924)

Mr. Andrew Janss, 19, is a Presidential Merit Scholarship recipient at the Manhattan School of Music, where he studies with David Geber. He began his studies with Andrew Cook in California, where he won a place in the state’s Young Artist Guild in 2001. That same year, Andrew became a Discovery Artist of the New West Symphony. With that honor came his first solo performance with a professional orchestra. He was asked to return in 2003 as an alumnus to perform the Dvorak cello concerto this past January. In his first year, Andrew was the only freshman to be selected to perform with the Manhattan School of Music’s Claremont Ensemble, the school’s most prestigious chamber music society. Additionally, his trio with violinist Tali Kravitz and pianist Renate Rolfing were selected from over twenty groups to play in the Lillian Fuchs Memorial Chamber Music concert, the School’s chamber music showcase concert. In addition to attending the Sunflower and Gold Coast Chamber Music Festivals, Andrew will be studying this summer with Itzhak Perlman at the first year of the Perlman Music Program’s Chamber Music Festival.

Mr. Sean Chen, 14, is an honor student at Oak Park High School. He has studied the piano for nine years, the last seven with Edward Francis. He has earned many awards for his performances. His first place award in the 2003 Pacific Piano Competition for high school pianists in Stockton is typical for his performance record. At age 9, he performed as a soloist with the New West Symphony in Beethoven's Concerto #2, and, at 10, with the Conejo Youth Symphony in a Mozart Concerto as winner of their Young Pianist Award. He has been the winner of numerous Southern California Bach Festivals, and has played at Branch, Regional, and Showcase recitals in Thousand Oaks, Ventura, and Santa Barbara for five consecutive years. Sean enjoys participating in Chamber Music ensembles and has worked in two trios coached by Joyce Osborn. His first trio with violinist Raymond Tong and Cellist Andrew Janss in 2000 won first place in the state VOCE (Vocal, Orchestra, & Chamber Ensembles) competition sponsored by the Music Teachers' Assn. of California. As a result, they were featured in recital at the state teachers' convention in San Diego. In 2003, his trio with Raymond and cellist Arthur Han, again, won first place in the state VOCE competition and performed at the state teachers’ convention in Santa Clara. The trio was also selected to perform at the International Young Artists Peninsula Music Festival in Palos Verdes.

Sean has played in numerous solo recitals, and has participated twice in the master class of famed international pianist Arnaldo Cohen at the Civic Arts Plaza, in Thousand Oaks, California. He has been a gold medal winner in the Conejo Valley MTAC-sponsored Twentieth-Century Festival, Romantic Festival and Minor-Masters Festival, each time earning a performance at the Gold Medal Honors Festival at the Scherr Forum Theatre at the Civic Arts Plaza. In 2002, He won first place in his category in the 2002 California Assn. of Professional Music Teachers Sonata Competition and was also the Los Angeles representative in the CAPMT annual Conference Honors Auditions in San that year. Sean was invited by the city of Thousand Oaks to perform at the 2002 “Encore Award for Excellence in the Arts” Gala, which was televised on local cable television in June of 2002. He has been invited regularly to be heard in the Leni Fe Bland Foundation auditions at the Santa Barbara Music Academy of the West, and had been a scholarship recipient for many years. In May, 2003, he was chosen by the Chopin Foundation of the United States as one its scholarship winners. He is a New West Symphony Discovery Artist for 2001, and was featured soloist with the orchestra in two performances of the Ravel Concerto in G Major, in Oxnard and Thousand Oaks. He was the feature soloist with Ventura College Community Orchestra in its May, 2003 concert.  His performance this evening is his second appearance with the CCO. He was sponsored by the Music Teachers’ Association of California, Conejo Valley Branch to perform in this body's Opus 4 concert.
